Lower handicappers will not find a better feeling, better performing set of irons, then these Hogans. So a higher handi-capper not used to controlling a heavier feel could have some trouble w/these irons, I guess. (That's why alot of people who shank sometimes tend to shank wedges - wedges are heaviest of the irons). I think shanking is caused by the golfer, not the club, however I will say that I think it's easier to shank a heavier club then a lighter one. In a few reviews I read about some guys who talked about shanking - THE dreaded word. Also, if you tend to like a "heavy head" feel, these are your irons. However, If you're low 80's and below, these are I think the best out there. I wouldn't recommend them if you shoot over mid 80's. You won't find a more aesthetically pleasing club anywhere. I've played graphites for 15 years and am biased toward them, but enjoyed the steel shafts as well. The only other club I have found that compares well is the new TaylorMade 300 forged.Īlthough these comments relate to the graphite version, I have also hit the steel shafts with similar results. Regardless of your handicap, just try these irons. The first flush shot you hit will have you wanting more and more.and these clubs provide it! You can hit shot after shot straight, long, and right on the money. Of course you have tremendous confidence standing over these irons because they truly are beautifully crafted pieces of art. Never a hint of the dreaded "shank" problem mentioned here in previous reviews. Even very poorly struck balls went in the general direction with good distance.
Perfect height, straight as an arrow, plenty of distance and the real key.consistency. I've made a few bad swings since and I've paid for it. If you don't have a good swing to begin with the ball isn't going to go where you wish. I don't necessarily find the club excessively forgiving. I can't speak for everyone else, but this is definitely a good club for the above average player. Look great in the bag and feel very confident at address. I had visions of some ugly Calloway offset. I'm still flying the ball 210-220 yrds with the 2 iron. I'm a strong long iron player and don't find too much sacrifice or loss of distance with the progressive offset in the longer irons. I know graphite and a forged clubhead isn't the perfect match, but this is about as good as it gets, which is quite good. The more I play with these irons the more refined the feel & control gets with the graphite. The lighter shaft is ultimately what I was looking for. I chose the graphite because I do get considerably more distance but still have the feel & control. In fact the lower lofts was a reason I bought these irons. Hitting the ball high has never been a problem for me, including my long irons. I was back and forth between the graphite and tour flighted 5.5.
My biggest quandary was selecting a shaft. The Apex Plus offers all of these qualities. Decided I needed a club that was just a little more forgiving, but yet responsive and offering feedback. The blades were great when I had the luxury of playing practically everyday but don't have the consistency anymore. I'd been playing with Hogan Apex Blades/Redlines for the last 14 years, but admittedly not that much golf the last 3-4 years.
